'IMPACT' came about after a conversation between Jorkes and Lisa Jäger, one of the curators of the WAF Galerie in Vienna. When lockdown hit and the parties were paused, they were left with nowhere to channel artistic needs and exchange feelings in an open and free space. When things started to open up, clubs were left out of the discussion and in these moments it became clear how important club culture is to the way of life for many, but also the IMPACT it has had on mainstream society.
From political movements to gender identification, sexual liberation to amplifying multiculturalism, club culture is a real driver of change. The pair then moved to set up discussions under titles such as 'clubs as places for freedom and emancipation' at the WAF Galerie that Lisa co-curates. Massimiliano Pagliara, Therese Terror and Cecile Balbous from Queer Base all contributed and two further talks are planned, with each one corresponding to each of the three volumes of IMPACT.
The first volume kicks off with Italian Massimiliano Pagliara, a master of translating deep feelings into his music as he flits between acid, disco and house. His 'I Feel Romantica' (named after the club at which Freeride Millenium have a residency) is a steamy disco cut that takes us back to the 70s era thanks to its bright synths, loose percussion and retro-future atmosphere.
German Benjamin Fröhlich is an esteemed producer who co-founded Permanent Vacation and last appeared on this label with a remix of Jorkes at the end of 2020. He offers the acid madness of 'Uff' which is riddled with wild percussion, slamming drums and real dance floor intensity.
Each Other is the duo of Justin Strauss and Max Pask and here they explore a rickety dark disco sound on 'For Them' with its strobe lit synths, steamy vocals and jacked up drums all locking you in.
Jorkes splits his time between Vienna and Stuttgart, hosts a radio show with Daniel Rajcsanyi on Radio 80000 and always operates at the fringes of any given genre. His 'Transcend' is a deep, dark and dirty low-slung house groove with menacing bass and eerie synth work.
Berlin via Chicago based Ukrainian and leftfield disco operative Alinka is having a huge year with standout music on the likes of Rekids and Needwant. On 'Disappear Into The Night' she layers up twitchy electronics with shimmering vocal samples, psychedelic keys and lo-fi house drums to make for a deeply absorbing cut.
Last of all, label regular Raphael Schön offers the warp speed techno of 'Healing' with its slick minimal synths and kinetic groove carrying you through the farthest reaches of the cosmos.
IMPACT once again features photography and artwork by Daniel Rajcsanyi.
